Music Director

From 2018, Simon NiemiƄski, current Acting Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney is the director of The St Mary’s Singers and is involved in all areas of music at the Cathedral with special responsibility for organ playing, 

Simon has an international reputation as a highly accomplished and experienced Church musician. Simon trained at the Royal College of Music, London, and had organ scholarships at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and York Minster.  As an organist Simon is respected around the world as a prolific concert and recording artist of great versatility and distinction. His extensive discography covers a wide range of composers and musical genres, to great critical acclaim. As a recitalist, Simon aims to programme unusual but attractive repertoire which will which appeal to organ buffs and sceptics alike.

 

Previous Directors

Thomas Wilson moved to Sydney to take up the position of Director of Music at St Mary’s Cathedral in February 2010. This follows five years at Westminster Cathedral in London, firstly as Assistant Organist, and later as Precentor. In 2013 Thomas was elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music. Thomas resigned as Director at the end of 2022.

Thomas oversees the schedule of the St Mary's Singers and occassionally directs the choir while in office.

 

Michael Butterfield has been appointed the Director of The St Mary’s Singers in 2017 until September of the same year to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. Previous to this, Michael was our accompanist and organist.

 

Oliver Brett was formerly Assistant Director of Music of St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney. He led the St Mary's Singers from 2012 to 2015 in singing with quality and style with beautiful liturgical music at masses and concerts.
